So just how long is a kayak, really?
As we look at the various kayaks on the market we notice that most of
the manufacturers talk about the importance of waterline length. We also
notice that almost no one lists their waterline lengths. The following is
a list of kayaks for which we know the waterline lengths. It also shows
the waterline length as percentage of the overall length. The average for
all of these kayaks is a waterline length which is 90% of the overall
length.
If you apply this ratio to our kayaks you'll find that at 16' 10"
the Q500 has, on average, a waterline equal to a 18' 8" kayak. The
Q400 with a length of 15' 3" has, on average, a waterline length
equal to a 17' kayak. What does this mean? It means efficiency; more of
the boat is doing what a boat should do, ply the water. Not sticking out
there catching the wind or adding weight with no purpose.
